Maui Special Rodeo

Home   Maui Special Rodeo

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2015 – 11:00-2:00 AT PIIHOLO RANCH.

Founded in 2010 by Team Roper, Cole Hendrickson for his Senior Class Project, the Maui Special Rodeo is fast becoming one of Maui’s favorite annual events. This rodeo is dedicated solely to children with special needs and is designed to provide an opportunity to experience all the excitement of a rodeo in a safe and supportive environment. The children have access to horseback riding, ‘dummy’ bull rides, roping instruction from real cowboys, rodeo games in the arena, a petting zoo, scavenger hunt, coloring club, and a swag bag full of rodeo goodies.

HISTORY OF THE MAUI SPECIAL RODEO:

In 2010, founder Cole Hendrickson, a team roper with a love for horses and rodeo, developed the Maui Special Rodeo at 17 years of age as a part of his high school senior project. Here’s a message from Cole:

“Last year I started volunteering at the Haku Baldwin Center’s therapeutic riding program. I enjoyed it because it allowed me to spread my love for horses and riding with the kids. It opened my eyes to yet another way that horses transcend words, as I saw these kids with special needs connect with the animals.

I decided to do the Maui Special Rodeo to introduce these exceptional children and young adults to the rodeo way of life and to all of my friends who rodeo with me here in our community. I think it will be a fun and awesome way to share the rodeo experience – firsthand. Young people and horses can be a great combination. I am looking forward to sharing my love for the sport with everyone who shows up and having a great time doing it.”  – Cole Hendrickson, 2010

We thank Cole and the Hendrickson family for their dedication to celebrating Maui’s children with special needs. With the support from our sponsors, donors, volunteers, and the community, we look forward to continuing the Maui Special Rodeo as an annual event on Maui.
