Horsemanship for Veterans

  • What Do We Do?

For over 30 years, Haku Baldwin Center has been the home of safe and quality equine-assisted services on Maui.

Since its inception in 2013, the Horsemanship for Veterans program has provided opportunities for military service members to experience the benefits of therapeutic riding and horsemanship.

Length of participation ranges from a single, introductory visit with the horses to long-term positions — dependent on availability and each individual’s needs.

Our team is experienced and ready to meet you at the barn.

  • Who Can Participate?

The Horsemanship for Veterans Program is open to U.S. military service members, including active duty, disabled, and retired veterans.

    Horse experience is not required.

We will do our best to accommodate any level of disability or ailment. Unmounted (non-riding) options are included in the regular lesson curriculum and available to those for whom riding may be inappropriate.

  • Why Horses?

Horses offer a powerful modality for learning and building positive, trusting relationships. Participants experience many benefits of working with horses, including being physically active in a serene outdoor setting.

A horse, being a dynamic living animal, lends itself perfectly to a multi-sensory approach. Grooming, riding, and horsemanship all contain therapeutic virtues.

Additionally, horses are prey animals, making them highly intuitive. They provide honest, non-judgmental feedback, creating a safe space for participants to relax and fully experience all that horsemanship has to offer.
